Client
need
John was a thirty five year old Vice President of Operations for
a major international engineering business. His personal performance
in his role was exceptional and he had been highlighted by the
president as having real potential to gain a presidency. However
his interpersonal skills were highly lacking with numerous consequences:
• A demotivated team around him
• Inability to develop good relationships
• Unable to get the best out of his people resulting in
underperformance
• Alienation from other members of the exec team
• Inability to present good ideas in an inspiring way
• Poor role model as a leader
The president, who was benefiting from personal coaching himself,
suggested that John worked with a coach to address the issue explaining
that it was the only thing now holding him back. As John was a
very ambitious individual he agreed.
Our approach
We developed a five month programme with John which consisted
of a full day session and four further monthly sessions. After
consultation with both John and his president we agreed the following
objectives:
• To understand the root cause of his interpersonal challenges
• To develop his attitudes and behaviours to enable him
to develop good
relationships
in all contexts
• To develop his leadership skills to motivate his team
and maximise their
performance
and become a role model as a leader
Through personal coaching John’s coach helped him to understand
the root cause of his issues. During the sessions, using unique
and highly impactful psychological tools, they worked through
the issues to enable John to move on from them. Once the root
cause was dealt with they were able to progress to developing
the new skills and behaviours John would need to achieve his career
aspirations. This included techniques to enable John to make the
personal changes necessary by changing and creating new habits
and beliefs. The final stage was for John to decide on and commit
to actions he would take from, here.
The Result
It was nine months later when his president said to us “what
did you do to him? He’s a changed man” and we knew
John had made real progress. He had implemented all the actions
he had committed to and the results were visible across his team.
During his final coaching review John reported to us the following:
• His team were working harder than ever before and productivity
had
increased
by 25%
• He had started to develop strong working relationships
with his peers and
team interfaces
had improved significantly. This resulted in a more
co-ordinated
approach to customer service and improved customer delivery
